Prosjektbeskrivelse

In the past years, according to different studies done worldwide, mental health became a burning issue. In the countries of ex- Yugoslavia there is an increase number of people struggling with mental health issues, as well as the lack of community services to offer innovative alternative methods for prevention and recovery, improvement of life quality and social inclusion for psychiatric care users.

The Mad Balkan- transforming psychiatry through art project- incorporates artistic creation, education and raising awareness on mental health and human rights of psychiatric care users, with main objectives being to provide social inclusion of psychiatric care users, integration of innovative practice of the use of arts and art therapy in the treatment of mental health issues, and international promotion of the Balkan practice.

Through active dialogue and joint artistic production of 13 professionals and artists, as representatives of the society in three Balkan countries (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia), and 32 psychiatric care users, and trans-boarder cooperation- 25 unique art works will be produced through 88 workshops, 288 support groups and 16 meetings- empowering participants on individual level, and serving as a bridge between people with mental health issues and their surroundings. Through collaboration with the Norwegian partner- Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet), 16 trainings in art therapy and the use of art as a tool of providing support for psychiatric care users will be offered as an innovative practice in the region, through collaboration with Universities and psychiatric institutions, to 120 students and mental health staff, and will be proposed as a part of University curriculum to local Universities by the end of the project. Through dissemination activities we reach wider audience, decreasing fear and prejudice, stigma and discriminative attitudes and behaviors, thus supporting the social inclusion of psychiatric care users.
