Government Grants for Artists – Information in English
Government Grants for Artists (Statens Kunstnerstipend) serve to secure diverse and innovative arts activity by providing grants for individual artists. The grants are awarded based on artistic quality and activity.
Who can apply?
Applicants must primarily reside and work in Norway. Applicants must be active professional artists and must have published, exhibited or shown their work in a public context. Students on BA and MA level are not eligible for grants from Government Grants for Artists.
The grants
There are six types of grants:
- Work grant: 1-5 years. 330 449 NOK per year (2025) disbursed in monthly payments.
- Work grant for younger and newly established artists: 1-3 years. 330 449 NOK per year (2025) disbursed in monthly payments.
- Miscellaneous grant: One-time payment of a maximum of 100 000 NOK for artistic activity.
- Miscellaneous grant for recently graduated artists: One-time payment of a maximum of 100 000 NOK for artistic activity.
- Grant for established artists: 10 years (or until the recipient reaches 67 years). 330 449 NOK per year (2025) disbursed in monthly payments.
- Grant for senior artists: 10 years (or until the recipient reaches 67 years). 330 449 NOK per year (2025) disbursed in monthly payments.
Application deadline
There is only one application deadline per year. The application form normally opens mid-September, with a deadline of mid-October. The decisions are published on our website at the end of March the following year.
How to apply
To apply, you need to submit an application in Kulturdirektoratet’s application portal.
The Committee for Government Grants for Artists, 5 members appointed by the Ministry of Culture, make the final decision on allocation of grants. 20 selection committees, with 104 members appointed by artists' organizations, evaluate the applications.
