Government Grants for Artists – Information in English
Government Grants for Artists (Statens kunstnerstipend) is intended to contribute to national arts policy by enabling individual artists, through direct public funding, to help ensure a diverse and innovative arts sector of high quality.
The grants are intended to give artists the opportunity to develop their artistic practice and to have artistic activity as their primary occupation.
Who can apply?
Applicants must primarily reside and work in Norway. You must be a professionally active artist in order to receive a grant.
The grants
There are six types of grants:
- Work grant (arbeidsstipend): 1-5 years.
342 193 NOK per year (2026) disbursed in monthly payments. - Work grant for newly established artists (arbeidsstipend for nyetablerte kunstnere): 1-3 years.
342 193 NOK per year (2026) disbursed in monthly payments. - Grant for established artists (stipend for etablerte kunstnere): 10 years (or until the recipient reaches 70 years).
342 193 NOK per year (2026) disbursed in monthly payments. - Grant for senior artists (stipend for seniorkunstnere): 10 years (or until the recipient reaches 70 years).
342 193 NOK per year (2026) disbursed in monthly payments. - Miscellaneous grant (diversestipend):
One-time payment of a maximum of 100 000 NOK for specific costs related to the artistic practice. - Establishment grant for young artists (etableringsstipend for unge kunstnere):
One-time payment of a maximum of 100 000 NOK for specific costs related to the artistic practice.
Application deadline
There is only one application deadline per year.
How to apply
To apply, you need to submit an application in Kulturdirektoratet’s application portal.
The Committee for Government Grants for Artists, 5 members appointed by the Ministry of Culture, make the final decision on allocation of grants. 19 selection committees, with members appointed by artists' organizations, evaluate the applications.
