The chapter brings together two research traditions that rarely meet: musicology, which studies music from the outside through theories and models, and artistic research, which works from the inside, drawing knowledge from the researcher's own creative practice. The editors argue that combining the two gives a richer understanding of what it means to create music today.
It also introduces the anthology's 12 articles – spanning folk music, improvisation, pop, contemporary and electroacoustic music – and the three themes they share: expanding our understanding and working methods, collective creation, and music technology practices.
This is an English translation of the introductory chapter from the anthology "Når musikken tek form" (When music takes shape).
