GrassrEUts is an innovative initiative aligned with the European Music Export Strategy, aiming to disrupt the dominance of Anglo-American repertoire in European music festivals. The project establishes a cross-border network, including Sziget Festival (HU), NOS Alive (PT), EXIT Festival (SRB), and the Jazz festival of Carthage (TNSA), with the goal of enhancing the visibility and competitiveness of European and neighbouring artists.
GrassrEUts adopts a core strategy featuring a multi-stage music contest in its festival network. Two emerging artists per nationality perform at affiliated festivals, fostering cross-border circulation for European and neighbouring artists. A distinctive feature of GrassrEUts is its emphasis on audience empowerment. The project challenges the traditional top-down approach to artist curation by involving the festival-going public in the selection process through a dedicated festival network app. This grassroots approach not only encourages audience involvement but also redefines the model of artist promotion, positioning the public as integral contributors to the initiative's success.
Furthermore, GrassrEUts supports Ukraine's cultural sector by facilitating live performances for Ukrainian artists on both EU and non-EU stages. Coordinated by the project partner All-Ukrainian Association of Music Events, a competition empowers Ukrainian artists to continue cultural creation and connect with audiences during challenging times.
The international dimension of the project is evident in its collaboration with festivals in Serbia and Tunisia, as well as the involvement of Ukraine. GrassrEUts addresses sector challenges in workshops, focusing on sustainability, inclusion in festivals, and strategies for EU music competitiveness. A dedicated sustainability workshop, led by Sziget's expertise, promotes eco-friendly festivals. Gender inclusion is tackled through a workshop by partner KUN Centre for Equality and Diversity.
